Drexel University Online Announces New Online Certificate in Peace Engineering
Drexel University will now offer the nation’s only online Graduate Certificate in Peace Engineering through its College of Engineering. The online program will admit students in the Fall and Winter terms, beginning in Fall 2019.
Drexel’s online Graduate Certificate in Peace Engineering focuses on ways to prevent and reduce conflict using STEM. It is a three-course, nine-credit program that can be completed part-time in less than a year. Developed in collaboration with the US Institute of Peace and the PeaceTech Lab, the curriculum includes courses on systems engineering for peacebuilding and conflict management for engineers. The program is ideal for engineers in any discipline who are working in conflict regions, as well as government and military officers and peacebuilding practitioners.
“As we respond to global stresses from climate change, urbanization, population growth and rapid technological development, it is increasingly important to apply engineering and technology in a way that minimizes conflict and builds peace, stability and security for individuals and communities,” said Associate Professor and Graduate Certificate in Peace Engineering Program Director Mira S. Olson, PhD. “The Peace Engineering program at Drexel University takes a systems-level approach to understanding the role of engineering and technology within the increasingly complex world. We are thrilled to offer the first graduate program in the nation dedicated to merging technical competencies with a broader understanding of the social dimensions of conflict in order to support more functional and equitable societies.”
