    LGBT Health Woefully Neglected as a Topic for Serious Research - Pittsburgh City Paper

    Dr. Randall Sell, a Drexel online professor, recently talked to Pittsburgh City Paper about the evolution of LGBT health issues occurring in public health conversations. 

     

    Sell recalls attending meetings at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) where researchers were instructed not to use the word "transgender."

     

    But, in recent years there has been progress in research and public health conversations in regards to LGBT health issues.

     

    In one example, the NIH created an LGBT research committee to suggest ways to support research and "increase the knowledge base for promoting the health of the LGBT community."

     

    "To me, it's a sea change when the director of the NIH knows all of the [research-related] words, knew what they meant and was identifying concerns," said Sell. "It felt like a switch that we've been trying to turn forever."
