Drexel Professor to Discuss E-Mentoring at International Conference

Friday, October 21, 2016

Victor Sohmen, Ph.D., Ed.D., associate clinical professor in the College of Engineering’s Project Management program, will speak at the E-Learn–World Conference. The E-Learn Conference, hosted by the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education, convenes experts from a variety of industries to discuss the opportunities and challenges of online learning.

The E-Learn Conference will bring roughly 1,000 professionals from more than 60 countries to Washington, DC, from November 14-16, in one of the largest gatherings of distance education professionals.

Sohmen will present a best practices session titled, “E-Mentoring of Professional Learners in an Online Graduate Program.” This is a topic that has gained momentum in recent years, thanks to the adaptation of technology. E-Mentoring improves the connections students make with their university through online mentors, primarily course faculty and advisors.

Sohmen’s findings, which are based on student interviews, uncover how an e-mentoring relationship can be mutually beneficial and how it can enhance students’ motivation, learning skills, and content mastery.

At Drexel, Sohmen earned the distinction of being named an Online Learning Council Faculty Fellow. Fellows serve as catalysts for quality and innovation in education.

“When Drexel’s faculty take advantage of these opportunities, it solidifies our University’s position as a leader in technology-enhanced education. Dr. Sohmen is a great champion for e-learning and we’re thrilled to have him disperse his knowledge on a global platform,” said Susan Aldridge, PhD, president of Drexel University Online.
